After a quick night’s stopover in Rome we were back on the train to lovely Assisi.
What a spectacular spot.
The town overlooks the rest of pastoral Umbria with everything – piazzas, basilicas, fields, crops – coloured with greens, browns and golds. You don’t have to work hard at understanding St Francis’ motivation in embracing the surrounding nature – all four of us were instantly taken with the serenity of the place, happy to wander narrow streets from cafe, to restaurant, to bar – and then back to cafe (with the occasional visit to a church). We only spent one night here, but after the bustle of Rome, it was bliss.
